Bella Dee’s uses the plant in some of our soaps for its anti-fungal quality, as the plant has long been used to fight foot fungus as well as other types of fungi on the skin.  The aroma it imparts to the soap is a  yummy bonus. Known locally as Pimienta Gorda, this spice is a staple in most Belizean kitchens and it is used to spice up soups and stewed fruits and even the traditional christmas black fruit cake.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera

Known as the “Plant of immortality”, has been widely known and used medicinally for years, both topically and internally.  Aloe Vera is a staple in most Belizean yards and can be grown indoors as well. Aloe Vera is an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and supports skin regeneration.  It is known to deeply penetrate the skin, up to 7 layers deep, and is therefore the best moisturizer for dry skin. When used on the skin, Aloe Vera promotes collagen and elastin repair for healthy skin, reduces inflammation, accelerates healing of skin lesions, and is a natural pain killer.

Jackass bitters

Jackass bitters

This is another local herb with wide medicinal application. It has been used to rid the intestines of parasites and treat malaria, diabetes, fungus and bacterial infections. It has insecticidal  properties and hence has been used to get rid of hair lice. It has even been used for tick control on small animals. The leaves have a bitter taste hence the name given to it locally. This plant is now fading into memory which is unfortunate because it was a staple of the bush medicine practitioners in Belize.
