Lemon grass

(Cymbopogon citratus)

Lemon grassThis is a very popular local herb that is used in a number of our soaps. Almost every Belizean has at some point in their lives used this “herb” for medicinal purposes. Many have very fond memories of their mothers, aunts or grandmothers making a nice warm infusion of this plant in milk to help them "sweat" out their fever. Yes, this plant is also commonly known as fever grass because it was the main use of this “herb”. As a tea it is also used to alleviate the symptoms of coughs and colds.

When the leaves are crushed, it gives off a strong lemon scented aroma. This plant grows almost everywhere in Belize. In fact, in the old days, almost every household had at least a tuft of lemongrass growing in their backyards. Now-a-days it is not so common.   The essential oil of this plant has been shown to have analgesic, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. The essential oil and crushed leaves of lemongrass used in our soaps hopefully will take you back to memory lane and at the same time provide some of its benefits to the largest organ of your body - your skin.
